Gabriela Gamboa is a visual artist working with a broad range of media, including photography, video and performance, sound and printmaking.
Though she was born in Pittsburgh she has spent the better part of her life in Venezuela.
Her work draws strongly on current affairs and the effect of disruptive political agendas resulting in displacements and upheaval, of which she speaks from the heart.
After three years at Universidad Central de Venezuela studying Biology, she went on to obtain her Bachelor Degree of Art and Design at the University of Chicago.
Gabriela worked as a still photographer in the film industry for many years and considers this experience the cornerstone of her strong belief in collaborative and participatory artistic work.
In the early nineties she co-founded the experimental multimedia group Polyburo, and participated in the sound collective Musikautomatika, developing performances deeply rooted in the physicality of communication and the politics of language, using the interrelation between multiple media as it refers to current affairs.
In 1992 Gamboa participated in the creation of the video department for the nascent Instituto Superior de Artes Armando Reverón in Venezuela, where she began a teaching career that continues to the present.
She has been a guest lecturer in many universities, most recently at Rice University in Houston, The International Center of Photography in New York, Maryland Institute College of Art and Cerquone Porject in Madrid.
She was the recipient of the Juan Lovera Prize 2002 at the prestigious Michelena Bienal in Valencia.
Gabriela Gamboa also has a Masters of Art from Massachusetts College of Art and Design.
